Supply & Demand: Hotel Rooms
I was checking for hotel rooms at my daughter’s college for an upcoming trip. I found a hotel in the area that I have become comfortable with. Good clean rooms, and a nice complementary breakfast. So this is where we usually stay when visiting.
I went on-line and the rooms jumped over 60% for one particular weekend! The weekend before, rooms were around $100 a night, the weekend after around $100. But this particular weekend…$160!
I called the hotel and they said a tournament that is occurring in another state, over 60 miles away has caused the rooms to go up. At the tournament, rooms in that city are going for an average of $340 to $440 a night, so a room at $160 seems like a bargain, even including the extra gas needed.
Well I’m out, and will have to pick another time to visit or find another hotel. Oh yeah, the tournament is the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. The hotel rooms are in Columbia, South Carolina. That’s one long drive, maybe a par 440!
