Raleigh Tornado 1988
Twenty years ago on this date a killer tornado unexpectedly touched down in Raleigh in the middle of the night. It flattened a K-Mart and killed two people in apartments, it lasted 2 hours killing another two further to the northeast.
That weekend was the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I was working at WTVD at the time [...]
Chocolate Pumpkin Pie
My niece, an avid pumpkin pie lover and a chocolate lover, thought it would be delicious to eat a chocolate pumpkin pie. I usually cook a pumpkin pie for our Thanksgiving meal; and this year I am adding a new twist. Basically the pie is made like a traditional pumpkin pie with the canned pumpkin, [...]
Griswalds? Not even close.
We enjoy decorating for Christmas every year. I do admit, it does take awhile. But we do it in little bits at a time. Last year we had honorable mention in our neighborhood for the outdoor lighting contest. I do take care of all the outside lighting and every year it seems to take a [...]
Apple Pie Topping
When I make apple pie, which I did yesterday, I only make a bottom crust. On top I use a topping that my mom used to make when she made pies for me when I was growing up. She gave me the recipe and it is mighty tasty.
Here it is, it’s simple. Mix 1 stick [...]
UNC State Frozen Football
Saturday at noon will be a cold at Kenan stadium when the Tar Heels kickoff against the Wolfpack. OK it might not be freezing, but it will be in the low 40s. At least there will be sun.
Our seats are on the north side, which is the sun side this time of year. There will be a huge difference from [...]
No Mountain Peak For Ann Curry
Unfortunately I saw today that Ann Curry who was trying to get to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, had to descend and give up their quest.
Here is her report from this morning. (It takes a few seconds to load.)
I was really hoping she could make it to the top. As I mentioned in a previous [...]
First Snow Of The Year!
Did you see it? Did you? I didn’t see any yesterday, my wife did. I saw video of the snow and even showed pictures on the air this morning. But in reality I never saw any snow, the airport did where we keep our records. So it is official.
Yesterday, November 18th we had our first snow [...]
Mountain Climbing
Watching the Today show and following Ann Curry up Mount Kilimanjaro has been fascinating. See is really struggling with the altitude. She is at 15,ooo feet and still has a few thousand feet higher up to go.
When I was a teenager, I camped on the side of Pike’s Peak in Colorado. We camped at about [...]
Selling Pinestraw To Myself
Not only did the weekend wind bring down most of the leaves; pine needles came down too. In my back yard I have 3 pine-trees than shed some of their needles throughout the year. But the biggest time in now. The pine tree turns some of its needles brown and with strong wind those pile [...]
Healthy Oats
I have read how oatmeal is a super food that is good for you. However, I don’t know if it is laziness or what, but I like oatmeal uncooked better than cooked. I always eat the old fashioned kind.
I have always wondered if you get the same health benefits from oatmeal by not cooking it. [...]
