Deep Fried Fair Food
We went to the NC State Fair over the weekend, and as usual it was a smorgasbord of fried food. One, is the fried candy bar. I am not a big fan of adding more fat to an already fattening food but decided to try it at home.
Here is the recipe for a fried candy bar:
1) Freeze the bar. 2) Add oil into a pot that can easily hold a candy bar, heat to 375. 3) Mix 1 cup of flour, 1 tsp of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. 4) Add the above to 1 cup of milk mixed with 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Mix well until free of lumps. 5) Take the frozen candy bar and dredge it in flour then put it in the batter. 6) Take the coated concoction and gently put it in the pot of 375 oil. It will fry very quickly. As soon as its golden brown use a slotted spoon to remove it and place the bar on paper towels to drain and cool a bit. 7) For a more authentic State Fair look, you can stick a wooden stick in it. Otherwise sprinkle with powdered sugar and you are good to go.
I was surprised but according to my fried candy bar expert, my daughter, it tasted like the real thing. I even had a bite and it was good.
