Costco For Cars
I went shopping for a car for a family member a few weeks ago. We knew what we wanted, a Toyota Avalon with vehicle stability control and leather seats. I went searching to find a good deal. Armed with the invoice price, any dealer kickbacks, etc., I knew that a 4 to 6% profit would be fair to a dealership wanting to deal.
Well some places had one stop pricing and I can see why they do this; they can charge more for the car. So they quickly got removed from consideration. Many dealerships have dedicated on-line salespeople. Through the internet, I found a couple of dealers, that after you add in all their fees, would offer the car for about a 4 to 6% profit. I was ready to deal. But….
Any cars with the options that we wanted were far and few between. As a matter of fact there were only 3 or so cars equipped the way we wanted them in the Carolina’s. Long story short, none of the dealers could get their hands on one. So while waiting to hear back about any availability, I checked out Costco. Yes, Costco sells cars! Costco has exclusive relationships with dealers across the state to sell cars. The Toyota dealership associated with Costco in North Carolina is in Winston-Salem. The nice sales lady there beat everyone’s price by $500 and they will deliver the car to us here in the Triangle! Deal done, that is if she could find a car like we wanted. She found an Avalon that is expected to arrive in the middle of July. I knew Costco was a great place to buy gas, $3.86 a gallon today, but I never thought I would get a car from them.
