Blongo Ball At The Beach

There is a new game I learned at the beach last week.  While I have played Bocce Ball and Wiffle Ball at the beach, I saw people playing a new game where golf balls were being tossed onto horizontal targets!  Now, I have seen a few frustrated golfers toss a golf ball, but this was new to me.  While some folks nicknamed the game Hillbilly or Poor Man’s Golf, the official name is Blongo Ball.  Say what?  I looked up the word in a dictionary and got this:

A universal adjective that the speaker wants it to mean: Good, bad, cool, uncool, hip, sweet, wasted, hurt, etc.  Coined by David G circa 1970 and still in use by a number of uncivilized peoples of the Northern Region.

“Man, you are so blongo.” “That car is blongo!” “I had too much fun last night. I am totally blongo.”

Now, here is a picture of blongo player, Doug, as he demonstrates his form.  I know he is civilized, although he is from the north, aka Cincinnati!  bongoball.jpg

The game is a lot of fun.  They even have an official website.  The family who brought this game to the beach was from Cleveland; and it appears that this game is very popular in the Midwest and new to the east coast.

I guess you could call today’s blog a “blongo” blog.
