Bird Island Mailbox
One of the best things about going on vacation is getting away from it all. Last week, I was beaching it at Sunset Beach. There is an uninhabited island next to Sunset called Bird Island. It used to be separated by an inlet but that disappeared during a storm a few years back. So Sunset and Bird Island are now permanently connected. It’s about a mile hike from the last beach cottage on Sunset to where Bird Island starts. It is well worth the walk; because when you get there its just you, the dunes, and the ocean. People walk it, ride it on a bicycle, or jog it often. There is a mailbox there where folks can write letters or notes to the “Kindred Spirit” of the Island.
I have stopped there and read some touching notes written about loved ones here and departed. Some of the notes were quite touching. The island can help clear your mind.
As I was riding a bike along Bird Island last week, I noticed a couple walking along the deserted shore. The man, however, had a cell phone to his ear and was jabbering away, while the woman walked in silence. That seemed kind of sad to me, that even on an uninhabited island, some people can’t seem to find a way to truly get away from it all.

Are there any hotels near there? We want to take a long weekend in August before the baby comes and head to a remote place on the beach…
Sunset beach is mostly beach houses, it is very low key. There is one small hotel there, called The Sunset Inn, http://www.thesunsetinn.net, and back across the causeway is Sea Trail where they also rent rooms, http://seatrail.com.
