Restaurant Manners
There is an old fashioned hamburger joint in Elizabethtown where folks line up for burgers starting at 7:30 am. That’s all they sell: hamburgers and hot dogs. As a family tradition and for good cheap eats, we go out of our way to stop there anytime we are going to and from the beach.
Well last [...]
Costco For Cars
I went shopping for a car for a family member a few weeks ago. We knew what we wanted, a Toyota Avalon with vehicle stability control and leather seats. I went searching to find a good deal. Armed with the invoice price, any dealer kickbacks, etc., I knew that a 4 to 6% profit would be fair [...]
Blongo Ball At The Beach
There is a new game I learned at the beach last week. While I have played Bocce Ball and Wiffle Ball at the beach, I saw people playing a new game where golf balls were being tossed onto horizontal targets! Now, I have seen a few frustrated golfers toss a golf ball, but this was new [...]
Bird Island Mailbox
One of the best things about going on vacation is getting away from it all. Last week, I was beaching it at Sunset Beach. There is an uninhabited island next to Sunset called Bird Island. It used to be separated by an inlet but that disappeared during a storm a few years back. So Sunset [...]
Camping For Science With Rock It Learning
It is well known that the United States isn’t turning out scientists like other parts of the world. It is something we lag in and I don’t know if it is our modern culture or what.
What I do know is we need to get children, especially girls, interested in science so some of them might [...]
DROUGHT IS BACK
I knew that once this hot dry pattern started in June that the drought that we worked so hard to get rid of would come back. Well today the Triangle is back in a moderate drought.
As the map above shows, the tan area is a moderate drought. Remember, the yellow is only abnormally dry [...]
Salmonella Tomatoes, Not In My Garden
With the salmonella scare pulling tomatoes off the shelves, it makes me happy that I decided to grow my own plants last month. Here is an update from my earlier blog. They continue to grow big and thick in their containers. The red mulch, shown to grow tomatoes bigger and faster appears to be working, [...]
State BBQ Championship Cookoff
Last Saturday I ate like a pig, or I mean, I ate pig. Well almost, it was like a buffet that would never end. We ate for almost 2 hours sampling 25 freshly cooked pork barb-b-que.
I was one of five celebrity judges at the State BBQ Championship cook-off on Saturday at the State Fairgrounds. The other judges [...]
Heat Tips For Staying Hydrated
Just got a message from a very nice lady who watches all the time but was a little concerned that we emphasize drinking water to stay hydrated in a heat wave.
Obviously you should avoid caffine and alchohol because that helps dehydrate you. But according to the Red Cross water is the best drink.
The nice [...]
How hot is hot?
Yesterday, I kept saying that the high would be a warm 88 degrees. My wife said to me that she disagreed and thought 88 was hot. I said, that I usually reserve 90 degrees and above for the hot label. Now, if we were to hit 88 in say March, that might qualify as hot.
