First 90 degree day in Raleigh-Durham
Tomorrow we could reach 90 for the first time this season. I remember last year when we hit 90 eight times in May. So I started thinking, last year we hit 90 on May 1st and this year it could be May 31st. Global Cooling?!
No…. just the natural variance in weather. As a matter of fact looking back in 2006 we didn’t hit 90 for the first time until May 25th and in 2005 it wasn’t until June 5th. It doesn’t seem to matter when the first hot day arrives as to whether the weather will be hot for the upcoming summer. But we can always hope…
One first 90 degree day I will always remember is in 1990. On March 12th we hit 90, the earliest ever. I was working at night doing the weather at WTVD and had to drive out to Falls Lake to do the 5pm-6pm weather. Well I guess everyone else decided to get out and enjoy the day because the traffic on NC-98 was crowded and I didn’t arrive until 5:45pm. Of course, I had no cell phone back then, nor a station radio; so I guess I left everybody in the dark (or the heat.) My good friend and then anchor George Mallet did the best job he could on the weather. It was like one of those dreams where you get stuck and miss an important event. Fortunately, it is the only time that ever happened to me; but needless to say the day and that day’s weather is firmly ingrained into my brain. Stay cool.
