Can You Eat A Chain Letter?
Everyone probably has been sent an e-mail where you are told to pass it on or else! I always delete those, but when my colleague Donald Jones brought me a bag of batter and told me to spend ten days squeezing the bag then to use it to make a bread, I was intrigued.
It’s called Amish Friendship Bread, it really should be called Cake with all the oil, sugar, and eggs in the recipe. It tastes really good, so I made the bread or eh cake just this week.
Now the “chain” part is to take some of the batter and pass it on to a friend. (There is no telling where my batter had come from before Donald)
I chose to bring my friendship bag of batter to work and give it to my other colleague, Sharon Tazewell. No telling who she will present her bag to, but I have heard that this Amish Friendship Bread has been going on for years, so her bag will continue to passed on and on with just a little bit being touched by a weatherman.
Recipe to make starter batter:
Mix: 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of milk. Put 1 cup starters into zip lock bags. If using one of these bags (or if you happen to get one from a friend), squeeze the bag once a day for ten days. During this time it is normal for the batter to thicken, bubble, and ferment.
On the tenth day you can make more starter following the above and or take your starter and add to it:
1 cup of oil, 1 cup of sugar, 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of milk, 3 eggs, 1 large box of instant vanilla pudding, 2 teaspoons of vanilla, 1/4 tsp. of salt, 1/2 tsp. of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Stir the batter together and pour into two greased loaf pans and bake at 325 for 45 to 60 minutes.
They also say not to use metal bowls or spoons. No need to refrigerate the starter. If the bag fills with air during the 10 day squeezing period, let it out.
