Authentic Irish Soda Bread
My mom was born in Ireland and moved the the U.S. when she was 24. She gave me this recipe for Irish Soda Bread. I have seen many different recipes for Irish Soda Bread, but I feel like none can be as authentic or taste as good as this one. I have made this mainly without raisins because my family isn’t into raisins. I grew up though, eating the version with raisins, either way the bread is good. Also, on St. Patrick’s Day, my mom would die the dough green. I wonder if anyone who she took the bread to thought it was moldy?! I’ll have to ask her. Enjoy.
Mix 3 cups of flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, 3 tsp of baking powder, 1/2 tsp of baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt. (Optional here, add one cup of raisins.) In a bowl make a “hole” in the dry ingredients and pour in a cup of buttermilk. Stir together; as it comes together, gently knead to form a ball. Put in a baking pan, gently pat down and cut a cross in it. Dab with a little butter. Cook at 350 for 45-50 minutes, until the bottom sounds hollow when tapped.

I have been looking for an authentic recipe for Irish soda bread for a couple of months now and I must say that this is the closest thing I have found to “the real thing.” My mum was also from Ireland and I spent part of my childhood there off and on so I have a good idea of what soda bread should taste like. Well folks, this is it!!! It doesn’t call for eggs, butter and other unorthadox igredients like orange zest!?!?!! I will deffinitely be adding this to my box of favorite recipes.
